Symposium to Advance Equity and Inclusion at USU Oct. 29

Utah State University President Noelle Cockett will host the second Inclusive Excellence Symposium Monday, Oct. 29, as part of her ongoing commitment to fostering an inclusive academic and community environment.

“Cultivating diversity of thought and culture” is a central tenet of USU’s mission and is the objective of the symposium.

“This event is about empowering the USU community in advancing equity and inclusion through education, collaboration and research,” Cockett said.

The symposium will offer education and training for understanding the experiences of underrepresented groups in order to reduce barriers to their academic and career success.

The event will feature two keynote speakers: Darren Parry, the chairman of the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation, will discuss the Bear River Massacre and a story of conflict, tragedy and ultimately, forgiveness. Angela Morrison, an associate professor of law at Texas A&M University – and a USU alumna – will talk about incorrect assumptions made about how the U.S. immigration system works and common myths about immigrants.

The symposium will also promote networking and space for university partners to collaborate and share experiences and expertise that contributes to equity and inclusion at USU and in its community. It is free to everyone.

Students, faculty, staff and community members are encouraged to register in advance for a full or half day at Lunch is included for those who register for it ahead of time, but space is limited.

The Inclusive Excellence Symposium is organized by Aggies Think, Care, Act, which embodies a set of community principles embracing diversity, human dignity and social responsibility. Think, Care, Act promotes the belief that all Aggies belong and encourages each individual to play a role in making the university an inclusive campus.
