Orem Business Owner Helps Hurricane Michael Relief Effort by Trading

Raises approximately $14,000 in about a week; goes to Florida to
help in relief effort

OREM, Utah–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#apiaryfund–When Shawn Lucas saw internet images of the devastation on the Florida
panhandle and heard about the destruction from people he knew there –
victims of Hurricane Michael – he kicked into high gear to do what he
could to help.

“I was in awe of the level of destruction and knew I wanted to help
those good people,” said Lucas, founder, and CEO of Apiary
Fund
and host of Trader on the Street. “I thought I could help, and
help in the best way I can – by trading.”

Lucas manages a $50,000 Apiary trading account typically used to show
how everyday people off the street can learn to trade for their YouTube
series, Trader on the Street. He traded on the account with the goal to
make as much profit as he could to be used and donated to the Hurricane
Michael relief efforts in Florida. See more details.

In a five-day trading week, he made $10,030. But that wasn’t enough. He
also started a GoFundMe account and encouraged other traders and people
to donate and try to match his trading profits to go towards the relief
effort. So far, the fund has raised nearly 1/3 of his trading profits.
Still, not enough, Shawn decided to go out to the Florida panhandle and
volunteer in the relief effort alongside other people and helping
organizations. People can contribute here
to help in the relief effort.

Lucas flew to Florida, rented a pickup truck, attached a U-Haul trailer
and filled it full of supplies to help in the relief effort – toilet
paper, water, gasoline, tarps, ropes, and other supplies. Headed to
Panama City, one of the most heavily hit locations, Lucas was met by the
unimaginable devastation. Downed power lines, downed homes, roofs were
blown away, unrecognizable streets, cars, and debris everywhere, metal
wrapped around trees, and downed trees as far as the eye could see. See
the video.

“I was completely taken aback by the amount of devastation,” said Lucas.
“Everywhere you looked there were tarps on top of houses with roof
damage.”

While there, Lucas grabbed a chainsaw to help clear trees and branches.
At one location he cleared trees to help a woman reach her house for the
first time since the hurricane. In another instance, he helped build a
shed for a family who lost their home and all their possessions.

Lucas also produced an upcoming episode of Trader on the Street, where
he taught a man named Jon who had lost his home how to trade. In the
time they traded together, they made about $2,000. Lucas made out a
check to Jon for that amount.

Lucas ended up going door-to-door to help “displaced people – people in
a really rough spot.”

“I was so impressed with the people out there, with their great
spirits,” said Lucas. “They’ve just been hit by this enormous hurricane,
but they’re out there helping each other.

“Sometimes I think all you see on the news is the negativity that comes
out with something like this,” he said. “But as we met those people, I
was so impressed with their goodness and the effort they are putting out
to rebuild their city.”

The funds raised by Lucas and others are being used for supply items and
the remainder of funds donated to organizations in the area helping with
the relief effort.

“I’m grateful that I was able to help those good people in a small way.
I’m grateful for all those who contributed with us and for those still
in the area helping out,” said Lucas. “I encourage everyone to do what
they can to help. There are several relief organizations people can
contribute to.”
