'In This Together' Theme for USU Science Week Nov. 1-8

The Utah State University community is invited to enjoy brain-energizing fun as USU’s College of Science Student Council hosts ‘Science Week’ Nov. 1-8.
“Our theme for the week is ‘In This Together,’” says Alex Lyons, USU Science Senator. “We invite all Aggies throughout campus to join us in the week of learning, service and fun.”
The week’s theme reflects the interdisciplinary nature of science and the diverse disciplines represented in USU’s College of Science, Lyons says. The theme is also a nod to global efforts to raise awareness of concerns about the long-term sustainability of the planet.
“Our Science Week colors are Pantone hues selected for the Ocean Agency’s worldwide ‘Glowing, Glowing Gone’ campaign aimed at climate and ocean conservation action, including awareness of endangered coral reefs,” Lyons says. “On Thursday, Nov. 7, the USU Geosciences Club has a demonstration activity called ‘Where are the Corals Going?’ that’s specifically about the effects of ocean acidification.”

Friday, Nov. 1
All Aggies are invited to Public Viewing Night at the USU Observatory, on the roof of the SER Building, from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Admission is free.
Monday, Nov. 4
Enjoy lunch from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. during Hoagies with Hagan on the third floor atrium of the Life Sciences Building with Science Dean Maura Hagan and Associate Dean Greg Podgorski. In the evening, all are invited to Women in Research Night, a series of fast-paced presentations featuring research from throughout the university, from 6-8 p.m. in the Taggart Student Center Stevenson Ballroom.
Tuesday, Nov. 5
From 11 a.m.-1 p.m., compete for treats at Science Trivia in the TSC Hub. At 5 p.m., head over to Research Mingle on the first floor atrium of the Life Sciences Building, where you can chat with USU researchers, learn about opportunities and enjoy free refreshments.
Wednesday, Nov. 6
As mid-terms heat up, chill out with Fear Factor: Liquid Nitrogen Marshmallows from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the TSC Hub. From 7-8:30 p.m., join the Science Council for Elemental Bingo, an annual Science Week favorite. Compete in bingo and mini-games for great prizes.
Thursday, Nov. 7
From 11 am-1 pm, join the USU Geosciences Club in the TSC Hub, for Where are the Corals Going?, a demonstration of ocean acidification’s effects on crustaceans, as part of our week’s focus on ocean and climate change. At 6 p.m., enjoy the movie, “Apollo 13,” in the Life Sciences Building auditorium, Room LSB 133, and enter a raffle to support The Family Place, a Cache Valley agency helping local families. Moviegoers may bring a dollar or a non-perishable food item to purchase a raffle ticket.
Friday, Nov. 8
Join the Science Council for outdoors fun on the Merrill-Cazier Library quad during Cornhole and Cocoa from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. At 7 p.m., all are invited to Science Unwrapped in ESLC 130, featuring local artisan baker Bill Oblock, who presents “Bake to the Future.” Admission is free.
