Fraternities and Sororities Sign Relationship Agreements with USU

Utah State University has signed relationship agreements with several sororities and fraternities for the 2020-2021 academic year. Four organizations opted not to sign agreements. Over the last two years, USU has worked to formalize its relationship with the fraternities and sororities that operate on the USU Logan campus. 

“This is one part of a series of substantial changes to the organization of the fraternity and sorority life system at the university to provide greater  accountability, education, and support for students,” said James Morales, USU’s vice president for Student Affairs.

USU acknowledges that when fraternities and sororities function in accordance with their stated values and missions, the entire university community receives positive benefits from their student leadership, involvement, service, and the various positive developmental benefits from individual members.

Morales said fraternities and sororities are an important part of the undergraduate student experience.

“A more formal relationship with greater connections helps assure students and their parents that these organizations are operating according to their expressed values and objectives,” he said.

The organizations that signed agreements include:

• Alpha Chi Omega
• Delta Sigma Phi
• Kappa Delta
• Phi Gamma Delta
• Psi Sigma Phi, Inc.
• Sigma Phi Epsilon
• Theta Nu Xi, Inc.

Those who opted not to sign relationship agreements include:

• Alpha Sigma Phi
• Alpha Tau Omega
• Pi Kappa Alpha
• Sigma Chi 

Along with university support, those organizations that affiliate with the university also have several privileges, including the use of USUSA marketing resources and listing on the USU website, university event resources and discounted rates, priority booking for facilities, recruitment activities monitored by the Fraternity and Sorority Life Council, participation in USU’s opportunities for leadership education and training, as well as social and recreational programs free of charge.

These changes came in response to several sexual assaults connected to fraternities near the Logan campus, as well as a settlement agreement in July 2018 with a survivor of one of these crimes. The university hired a full-time fraternity and sorority life coordinator in August 2018 to help create a program to formalize these important relationships. The organizations had until July 1 to sign relationship agreements with USU.
