USU Symphony Orchestra Splits into Two Chamber Orchestras for Covid-Era Performance

The Utah State University Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Thomas P. Rohrer, performs Thursday, October 22, at 7:30 p.m., in the Daines Concert Hall on the USU Campus in Logan. Those unable to attend may view the livestream at ccapresents.usu.edu.
“With Covid regulations in effect, the orchestra will divide into two smaller chamber orchestras performing separately this year,” Rohrer, director of bands in the Caine College of the Arts (CCA), said. “This concert, the first of two this semester, features two student soloists, Olivia Thompson and Megan Warburton.”
Thompson, violin, and Warburton, soprano, are winners of last year’s Concerto Competition.
The concert begins with “Russlan and Ludmilla Overture” by Michael Glinka, continuing with the first movement of Mendelssohn’s “Concerto for Violin and Orchestra,” featuring Thompson and conducted by Nicholas Morrison, clarinet professor in the CCA. The first half of the concert ends with a classical symphony for string orchestra by Giovanni Sammartini.
The next chamber orchestra opens with “Sinfonia in D” by Johann Stamitz conducted by Morrison. Warburton sings “Ah! Je vivre” from Charles Gounod’s Romeo and Juliette. The concert concludes with “Symphony No. 104 ‘London’” by Joseph Haydn.
Tickets are open to students, faculty and staff with USU ID. Students free, faculty/staff $10. No day-of-show ticket sales or online sales.
