Blue Plate Research Event Tackles Obesity Research

Long thought to be an individual concern, new discoveries indicate that obesity is contagious, and societal factors are a primary driver of its spread. Three Utah State University researchers will be sharing the latest findings, such as these, at the next USU Blue Plate Research event Wednesday Jan. 13, at 11:30 a.m. MST.
Understanding Obesity: New insights into body fat measurement, disordered eating, and external factors will be hosted virtually via Zoom.
Presented by Utah State University and sponsored by Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Utah, Blue Plate Research is an event series focused on sharing easy-to-understand well-being research with Utah health advocates, statewide stakeholders and the public.
During this virtual event, you’ll hear from three USU researchers who are seeking to understand obesity from different perspectives:
- Gabriele Ciciurkaite investigates how sociological factors such as neighborhood components and social networks impact obesity.
- Dale Wagner researches various methodologies that can be used to assess body composition.
- Maya Miyairi Steel researches ways to educate people in developing healthier relationships with food and how to improve the conversations we have surrounding weight.
The event will feature a 20-minute video presentation that will provide an up-close look at these researchers, show highlights of their work and introduce their findings. The presentation will be followed by a live panel session with the three presenters answering questions from the audience. Both parts of the event will be hosted live on Zoom, via a link that will be emailed to those who RSVP on the Blue Plate Research website.
