Teacher Education and Leadership Professor named Editor in Chief of International Journal

Sherry Marx, professor in Utah State University’s School of Teacher Education and Leadership (TEAL), was recently named editor in chief of the International Journal of Multicultural Education (IJME).

IJME is a peer-reviewed, open access journal that is committed to promoting cross-cultural understanding, educational equity for diverse students and global justice for marginalized people in all levels of education. The journal accepts high quality submissions globally from the fields of education, anthropology, sociology, cultural studies and other social sciences.

“This journal is near and dear to my heart with its international and qualitative focus,” said Marx. “The editorial board is an impressive, dedicated international group with folks in South Korea, Australia, Mexico and several different time zones in the United States.”

Marx has worked with IJME since 2017, working with authors and reviewers as a co-editor of the journal. She also guest edited two special issues of the journal: one on critical autoethnography and another on using technology to advance social justice in education. She took over as editor in chief in March of 2021.

“My goals for the journal are to keep expanding readership and improving quality,” said Marx. “In the past few years, its international ranking among journals has risen substantially. I hope scholars at USU will consider it as a possible outlet for their research.”

Cindy Jones, TEAL department head, voiced her support for Marx.

“Dr. Marx’s expertise in issues of education, diversity and equality is highly valued,” Jones said. “We appreciate her contributions to our department and the field of education as a whole, and look forward to seeing where this new opportunity takes her.”

Marx is a professor and director of research at the School of Teacher Education and Leadership, part of the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services at Utah State University. She specializes in multicultural education and qualitative research and has taught undergraduate and master’s courses in diversity, as well as courses in qualitative research at the doctoral level. Marx is the founder of the Qualitative Research Virtual Lab, a collaboration between faculty and doctoral students in the practice of critical qualitative research.
