The Utah Society for Environmental Education (USEE) is thrilled to announce that the 27th Annual Utah Environmental Education Conference will

The Utah Society for Environmental Education (USEE) is thrilled to announce that the 27th Annual Utah Environmental Education Conference will be in Logan April 7-8, 2017. The last time the conference was in Logan was 23 years ago! USEE [you-see] has been hosting the Annual Utah Environmental Education Conference since 1989. The conference is 2-3 days chock-full of breakout sessions, workshops, outdoor experiences, and round table discussions. The 2017 conference includes a statewide focus that caters to a variety of participants including: novice and experienced environmental educators, PreK-12 in-service and pre-service educators, non-formal/community based educators, outdoor enthusiasts and leaders, agency representatives, staff and volunteers from non-profit organizations, higher education personnel, students, and interested members of the community.

The conference will take place at the Cache Valley Center for the Arts Bullen Center, downtown Logan, April 7, 8:30 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., and April 8, 8:30 A.M. to 1:30 P.M. Saturday, April 8, will also include 3 options for outdoor field trips 1:30 to 4:30 P.M. Keynote Speakers include Bora Simmons, Senior Research Associate and Director of the National Project for Excellence in Environmental Education, Institute for a Sustainable Environment, University of Oregon, and Dan MacNulty, Assistant Professor of Wildlife Ecology, Wildland Resources, USU. Featured speakers include Chris Luecke, Dean of the Quinney College of Natural Resources, USU, and Shaun Dustin, Mayor of Nibley.

“We are really trying to broaden the idea of what fits under the environmental education or EE umbrella. This year we have strands that include citizen science, sustainable practices and Utah Green Schools. If you’re doing outreach in your community that encourages appreciation of the natural environment or sustainability, then we want you to feel that this conference is for you too,” says Jackie Lowry, Programs Manager at USEE.

We feel that 23 years is too long for the conference to come to Logan, and we intend on making Cache Valley one of our regularly recurring locations going forward. There is a lot of support in the area for environmental education and we want to continue to build on that support and strengthen relationships. There is a great deal of opportunity for meaningful partnerships and collaborations.

The Annual Utah Conference includes the presentation of statewide awards for Environmental Education. The categories include: Environmental Educator, Environmental Education Program, Environmental Education Business (those businesses that either provide EE, support EE and/or are exemplary models of sustainability in the community), and Environmental Education Volunteer of the Year. The awards will be presented during an Awards Luncheon on Friday, April 7.

A pre-conference workshop, Guidelines for Excellence: Best Practices in EE will be led by one of our conference keynote speakers, Bora Simmons. The workshop will be on Thursday, April 6, at Logan City Hall. This workshop is open to the public. Registration is $35. For more information and to register for the workshop, go to http://usee.org/events/annualconference.

About the Utah Society for Environmental Education
The Utah Society for Environmental Education (USEE), a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit, and has been a statewide leader in promoting high quality environmental education in Utah since 1981. USEE encourages environmental literacy by teaching Utahns how to think, not what to think, about the environment.

Cache Valley is one of the best places to see a wide variety of migratory birds year-round. You can see

Cache Valley is one of the best places to see a wide variety of migratory birds year-round. You can see everything from songbirds to Great Horned Owls without leaving the valley.

Perhaps the best place to start is Cutler Marsh, which is located west of Logan on Utah Highway 30. Cutler Marsh is home to a variety of beautiful birds. Not only does the marsh house Sandhill Cranes and White-faced Ibises, but there are American White Pelicans, American Avocets, Black-necked Stilts, Canadian Geese, and a variety of herons, egrets, ducks and shorebirds. Several streams located in this area support a variety of songbirds. The marsh is easy to navigate and there is always has something new to see.

Another great birding area is Dry Lake. Located 15 miles from downtown Logan on Hwy. 89 between Logan and Brigham City, Dry Lake has ponds and marshes that are formed by snow run-off. Like Cutler Marsh, Dry Lake has many White-faced Ibises, White Pelicans and other waterfowl that are easy to see from the side of the road. Birds are plentiful in spring and early summer. After that the water evaporates and the birds do too.

Surprisingly, a great place to see a variety of birds is the Utah State University campus and Old Main Hill. Cedar and Bohemian Waxwings, finches, Pine Siskins and Red-breasted Nuthatches can be seen nesting in the trees around campus, but there is one bird that is truly a sight to see. A Great Horned Owl lives in the cemetery behind the HPER building and has become an icon to the area.

A more strenuous hike with more reward is located at the Wellsville Ridge. The Wellsville Ridge is chilly in the fall, but is a great place to see migratory hawks or eagles from late August until the middle of November. Not only will you see many amazing birds of prey, but you will also get breathtaking views of the entire valley.

Cache Valley is also home to Bald and Golden Eagles. Bald and Golden Eagles can be seen at the visitor center of Hardware Ranch. Hardware Ranch has an easy trail where these majestic raptors can be seen.

Green Canyon is also a great place to see a Golden Eagle if you really look for it. Ruffed and Blue Grouse are more easily seen. Canyon wren are rarely seen in this area, but are often heard, so keep your ears
open as well as your eyes.

Golden Eagles are also spotted at Tony Grove Lake. Tony Grove Lake is home to over twenty species of birds, which includes many uncommon birds such as the American Three-toed Woodpecker or the Williamson’s Sapsucker usually dwelling in the trees by the lake.

Cache Valley is a great place to see many uncommon and unique birds dwelling in the trees. With a national forest and several canyons, birds have found a true sanctuary here. From birds of prey to waterfowl, you can see a variety of birds within just a few miles of each other.

Cache Valley has a rich history and culture that can best be seen at one of its many museums. Each

Cache Valley has a rich history and culture that can best be seen at one of its many museums. Each museum is unique and offers exhibits that highlight the valley in different lights. In order to get the full scope of the valley, make sure to visit each museum.

American West Heritage Center

This museum prides itself on being a living history center. Located in Wellsville, American West Heritage Center offers many hands-on activities that the whole family can participate in to discover what it was like to live in the Old West. Dip candles or dress up as a pioneer here for the full frontier experience.

The center doesn’t just have activities – it also has historical exhibits that show the history of Cache Valley. Find out about the early settlers here. Check it out at 4025 U.S. 89 in Wellsville.

Hyrum Museum

Like the American West Heritage Center, the Hyrum Museum focuses heavily on early Cache Valley. Beginning with prehistoric Lake Bonneville and ending with the mid-twentieth century, this museum shows what life was like for the earliest inhabitants to ones who are still alive today. Check out the artifacts to discover the true culture of Cache Valley at 50 W. Main St. in Hyrum.

Museum of Anthropology

Located in the Old Main building on the Utah State University campus, this museum features exhibits about the Great Basin, Polynesia and many other places around the world.

The Museum of Anthropology also has special programs every Saturday night that display different parts of the world. Discover the entire world without having to leave Cache Valley at this museum.

Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art

Also located on the USU campus, this museum displays different kinds of art. From modern to contemporary visual, the museum has one of the largest collections in Utah.

Though the museum focuses on modern artwork, there is a lot of Native American and historical ceramic artwork that can be seen. This museum is located at 650 N 1100 E to the east of the Kent Concert Hall on campus.

USU Geology Museum

If rocks, minerals and fossils are more your speed, don’t miss the USU Geology Museum. The museum has prehistoric fossils that are unique to this area. Discover exactly what Cache Valley is made of here. This museum is located in room 203 of the Geology building on USU’s campus.
Intermountain Herbarium

This museum has more than 237,000 plant specimens for you to behold. Of that 237,000, half are from this region and half are exotic, so don’t go in expecting to see your average plants. This museum is located at 5305 Old Main Hill on the Utah State University campus.

Whether you’re interested in the physical landscape of the valley, the early settlers or modern artwork, Cache Valley has a museum that is perfect for you.

A local Logan family recently started an online vlog. It took Tara Petersen nearly 2 years to convince her husband, Michael, to post home-videos on YouTube.

While living in Washington D.C., Tara wanted a digital way of storing and sharing her experiences with family and friends back in Utah. Tara and Michael can barely believe that they now have nearly 50 videos and almost 200 subscribers. Vlogging, is literally video blogging. Rather than writing up experiences, thoughts and stories, vloggers simply video moments of their lives and upload them as videos on YouTube to share with the public.

Michael is a local, Cache Valley native and Tara is from St. George. They have enjoyed the opportunity of sharing a bit of their lives with others all while capturing and storing important memories. You can check out and subscribe to their YouTube channel, PetersenPeeps Vlogs by clicking here: www.youtube.com/channel/UClyhwAck2jAMmh5O_gwEARg
