On February 21, Logan City Mayor Craig Petersen recommended to the City Council that a new library/community center be built

On February 21, Logan City Mayor Craig Petersen recommended to the City Council that a new library/community center be built at the site where the Emporium and Poco Loco buildings are now located. The new facility will draw people into Logan’s downtown and make more effective use of a location that has been vastly under-utilized for decades and has little prospect for change without City involvement. This project will be a significant undertaking for the City. The preliminary budget is $12,000,000. No tax increase will be needed. Most of the funding has already been identified from existing City resources. Current and accruing library building fund reserves will generate $4,300,000. City properties that have recently been sold will provide $2,900,000 and other City reserves specifically designated for economic development another $2,000,000. The funding plan is that the remaining $2,800,000 needed for the library/community center will be raised from private donations. A library fund-raising effort will begin immediately. To start that campaign, Mayor Petersen will work without pay for the remaining ten months of 2017. Pending approval by the City Council at its March 7 meeting, his salary and the associated benefits, totaling $93,000, will be donated to the Library Building Fund. According to Petersen, “This is an important project for Logan City and for me personally. I want to demonstrate my strong commitment by being the first to contribute to the fund-raising effort. I hope that others will see the need for and value of a new library/community center and financially support this important project.” Along with the private fund-raising effort, the next step in the process will be to form a small steering committee whose first task will be to select an architectural firm to design the facility. The steering committee will also provide on-going guidance for the project.

Winners of 3rd Annual Utah High School Clean Air Poster Contest Announced

LOGAN—“Utah Air Quality” is the theme of Utah State University’s Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art’s (NEHMA) “Family Art Day,” Saturday, Feb. 18 from 11a.m.-2p.m. in the Merrill-Cazier Library, room 101.

NEHMA has partnered with the Merrill-Cazier Library and the Utah High School Clean Air Poster Contest, an initiative of Roslynn Brain (USU Extension Sustainability) and Edwin Stafford (Jon M. Huntsman School of Business).
NEHMA and the library will feature the winning designs of the Utah High School Clean Air Poster Contest, with an awards ceremony for the grand-prize winners and a clean air hang tag making art activity.
“More than 400 teens from six high schools across Cache Valley have created educational posters promoting clean air action,” said Edwin Stafford, professor of marketing at the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business. “Many of the posters are beautiful, funny, provocative and tied to teen pop culture and values. We’re excited to partner with NEHMA’s Family Art Day to announce the contest’s grand-prize winners, celebrate their creative work and empower people on how to preserve Utah’s air quality.”
NEHMA, Merrill-Cazier library staff and high school clean air poster contestants will assist participants in creating unique rear-view mirror hang tags to remind drivers of the hazardous effects of idling. The goal is to spread awareness about Utah air quality while simultaneously helping the environment and decreasing health problems associated with poor air quality.

In addition to making hang tags, participants will get to see the top clean air poster entry finalists created by students from Logan, Sky View, Ridgeline, InTech, South Campus and Fast Forward high schools. At the event, eight grand-prize student winners will be announced, with each winning cash prizes ranging from $100 to $250, donated by local businesses and organizations. Winning posters will be displayed in the community for education outreach.
The Family Art Days program is free and open to the public. These family-friendly events provide families with a creative outlet and resources for a quality learning opportunity catered to all ages. The Family Art Days will continue on a monthly basis. Upcoming Family Art Days include Mapmaking Saturday, March 18 and Book Making Saturday, April 15.
NEHMA is located on the USU Logan Campus. While the museum is closed for construction, it will continue to host events such as Family Art Days at other venues like the Merrill-Cazier Library. See the museum’s website (artmusuem.usu.edu) to stay updated on upcoming museum events.
