Marshall Public Library Seeks Children for Augmentative & Alternative Learning Group

The Marshall Public Library is looking for local children to participate in a new augmentative and alternative learning program.

Recently, library staff purchased eight iPads and special software with the help of a grant from the Rotary Club of Pocatello and Rotary District 5400. The technology will allow librarians to host a reading group for children who cannot or prefer not to communicate verbally. Speech therapist Krista Hale and early literacy librarian Becca Hyde are developing the curriculum.

“The devices become voices for the children,” said Hyde. “The devices ease frustration and improve their lives as they can spontaneously converse, ask and answer questions and express their feelings and thoughts.”

Currently, library staff are seeking children to be part of the group. The group is open to caregivers and family members as well.

“The program is similar in purpose to a typical story time,” Hyde said, “and is designed to help children achieve literacy, learn socialization skills, and enjoy learning and the library.”

The group starts in April. Residents who are interested in participating are asked to contact Amy Campbell at acampbell by March 27.
