City Council To Kickoff Las Vegas’ Bid To Become An All-America City

City Of Las Vegas A Finalist For National Award

The Las Vegas City Council will officially kickoff the city’s candidacy to become an All-America City at the Wednesday, May 16, City Council meeting following the 8:30 a.m.Redevelopment Agency meeting in Council Chambers on the second floor of Las Vegas City Hall, located at 495 S. Main St.

The All-America City Awards are given annually to 10 deserving cities by the National Civic League. The awards recognize cities whose residents work together to identify and address community-wide challenges. The National Civic League was founded in 1894 and the city of Las Vegas is one of 20 finalists for the award.

In addition, Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman will recognize the work of outgoing Clark County School District Superintendent Pat Skorkowsky. Skorkowsky has spent the last 27 years as an educator in Clark County, rising from a first-grade teacher to the post of superintendent.

Ward 6 Councilwoman Michele Fiore is scheduled to recognize the winners of the Safekey APPLECORE Reading Contest. This program measures the amount of minutes that students in the Safekey before- and after-school program read, and the school and students with the most minutes read receive awards.

In addition, Ward 3 Councilman Bob Coffin is scheduled to recognize the 60th Anniversary of the First Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and School, located near downtown.

Finally, Councilman Stavros S. Anthony will recognize local elementary school students who have completed the Great American Pride Program. Students who complete the program must be able to recite the Gettysburg Address and the preamble to the Constitution, name all the presidents, states and capitals, sing the national anthem and write the Pledge of Allegiance.
