USU to Conduct Active Shooter Training Exercise Sept. 5
Utah State University is conducting an active shooter exercise Wednesday, Sept. 5, from 8 a.m. to noon, at Valley View Tower, an empty former residence hall on the northeast side of the Logan campus. Students and the campus community are asked to stay away from the immediate area if possible.
A USU Code Blue System Alert test will be sent to all subscribers. In the event of a true emergency, USU would notify the campus community through the Code Blue system. Those who haven’t signed up are encouraged to sign up at www.usu.edu/alerts.
The drill includes police and responders from both the university and local Logan and Cache County community and is designed to ensure coordinated, timely and effective response and recovery in the event of an active shooter emergency. The exercise should not disrupt or interfere with those on campus, however emergency vehicles may be parked near the scene. The university is open for classes and business that day, including Edith Bowen Laboratory School and the Center for Persons with Disabilities. Signs will be posted in advance and throughout the duration of the exercise.
The exercise allows USU and first responders in the area to practice their skills and response procedures. USU encourages all members of the campus community to be prepared for any hazard or danger.
“The safety of our campus community is extremely important to everyone at USU, and we plan to implement emergency exercises at Valley View Tower throughout fall semester,” said USU Vice President for Student Affairs James Morales. “We appreciate everyone looking out for each other and for being part of the Aggie family.”
During a real emergency, updated information can also be found at www.usu.edu/emergency, as well as on USU’s Facebook page and Twitter account.
Valley View Tower is a high-rise former residence hall on the university that will be torn down by January 2019.
