The City of Flagstaff approved a Memorandum of Understanding with the Hopi Tribe, outlining a partnership to explore development of a 19 megawatt (“MW”) renewable energy project on Hopi-owned tribal lands, outside of Flagstaff city limits. The collaborative is aimed at helping the City achieve its 100 percent renewable energy goal for all city government operations.

“This innovative partnership embraces the collaborative spirit, while working to identify creative solutions for renewable energy and economic development,” said Mayor Evans.

The partners will utilize a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). The PPA will require a developer to lease land from the Hopi Tribe and finance and build the project. The City of Flagstaff would then purchase the renewable energy through the developer. While the City has used a PPA in the past to purchase renewable energy, this project would be on a larger scale.

“I am eager to work with the Hopi Tribe and the selected developer on project specifications that will result in clean electricity for the City,” said Nicole Antonopoulos Woodman, City of Flagstaff Sustainability Manager.

The City plans to release a Request for Statements of Qualifications (RSOQ) for renewable energy developers in April 2018.

According to Steve Puhr, the Hopi Economic Development Corporation Manager of Development & Strategy “We look forward to assisting the City as it moves to its goal of 100 percent renewable energy, while simultaneously moving the Hopi people towards greater self-reliance.”

If you have any questions about the renewable energy collaboration, please contact Nicole Antonopoulos Woodman at nwoodman.

Standing up for campaign finance transparency in city elections, the Phoenix City Council voted to commence research on drafting an ordinance to bring light to unaccountable money spent in city elections (aka – dark or dirty money). Since the Citizens United decision by the U.S. Supreme Court, elections at all levels of government have been swamped by billions of dollars of untraceable spending by those not courageous enough to put their name by their contributions. In a 6-3 vote, the city council began the process of standing up to dark money and restoring accountability to campaign spending.

“Current law allows wealthy individuals, corporations and interest groups to hide funding details from the public. I think that’s wrong—groups that want to spend money to influence our city elections should have to report where their money’s coming from and who’s behind them,” said Phoenix City Councilwoman Kate Gallego.

Gallego led the charge to bring this issue before the council for today’s vote. Gallego added, “Voters deserve to know the facts—and they can make up their own minds about whether they agree with the financial backers of these groups funneling unaccountable money into our elections.”

Phoenix City Councilwoman, Debra Stark, who also voted in favor of the measure said, “This will be a positive move as it will provide additional disclosure and information to the voters of Phoenix.”

The Phoenix City Clerk Department and Law Department will commence research on ordinance language and necessary charter changes and will return to a future meeting of a council subcommittee with options for the city council to consider.

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Glendale City Manager Kevin Phelps has selected Jim Burke as
the city’s new director over the Public Facilities, Recreation and Special Events
Department. The permanent appointment comes three months after Burke assumed the
role as the departments interim director.
“Jim brings decades of experience and leadership to this important role directly serving
our public,” said Glendale City Manager Kevin Phelps. “He understands this region and
the needs of our residents and we are very pleased to have him become a permanent
member of our team.”
Burke began the transition into his role last December when he was named interim
director of Public Facilities, Recreation and Special Events. “Glendale has a very robust
parks system, and this is an exciting time with many opportunities to continue to serve
those who live, work and play in this great city,” said Burke.
Burke brings 34 years of experience in the parks and recreation profession. Most
recently, he was the Parks and Recreation Director for the city of Phoenix where he
managed a $106.5 million operating budget and oversaw a department with more than
1,000 full-time and 900 contract employees. Burke played a key role with the
development of the extensive land preserve system in Phoenix, execution of several
major library projects and he worked on the planning and design of multiple community
centers, pool complexes and golf courses during his tenure with city of Phoenix.
Burke holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Arizona and a Master’s Degree
from the University of Phoenix.
Glendale’s Public Facilities, Recreation and Special Events Department provides a
multitude of “quality of life” services to residents across the city, including the operation
of parks, recreational amenities, festivals and event and civic meeting space and brings
in revenue through tourism programs that drive visitors to the city. For more information,

@PureFlix is teaming up with @ClearPlay, giving parents power to filter all offensive language from their content!

Tweet this

ClearPlay’s innovative playback filtering technology is designed to work with the PureFlix.com existing library of more than 5,000 titles. It also opens the door for the addition of new content, which previously may have been rejected due to concerns about inappropriate language.

Now, by simply enabling the filtering technology from an on-screen PureFlix.com menu, all offensive language is seamlessly muted during playback.

While PureFlix.com is available on several streaming devices, the filtering technology is currently designed to work only on ROKU and most computer browsers. It will be available to PureFlix.com subscribers in spring 2017.

“Working with ClearPlay enables us to further fulfill our promise of no language, sex or violence surprises with our faith and family-focused content,” said PureFlix.com’s CEO Greg Gudorf. “A portion of our customer base–who have very strict personal guidelines on what they deem appropriate–has spoken and we’ve listened.”

While the clear majority of PureFlix.com’s content is completely free from what most consider offensive language, some conservative Christian families have a zero-tolerance policy for certain imagery and/or words. For example, in the wholesome “Heartland” series, the word “hell” is uttered during an occasional episode. With ClearPlay’s technology enabled, this and all language considered offensive is muted without interrupting the program being viewed.

“This is a tremendous win-win situation for the consumer,” said Matt Jarman, CEO of ClearPlay. “Parents can now fine-tune their family’s viewing experience for even more wholesomeness in their entertainment and both companies get to fulfill their goals of providing families with positive entertainment.”

The donation is part of a recently launched national initiative featuring Hasbro’s NERF products that encourages young people to become more active through “exergaming.”

UnitedHealthcare will visit nearly a dozen Boys & Girls Clubs across the country to demonstrate how to use the NERF ENERGY Game Kits throughout the holiday season, a time when children tend to be more sedentary. In addition to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Phoenix, UnitedHealthcare will donate more than 1,500 NERF ENERGY Game Kits to Boys & Girls Clubs in California, Kansas, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Nevada, Ohio, Texas and Washington.

The donations are part of a national rollout of the game to schools and youth organizations. Throughout 2017, UnitedHealthcare will deliver a total of 10,000 NERF ENERGY Game Kits to elementary schools and community organizations across the country, enabling children ages six to 12 to receive the kits at no cost.
