King Calls On Elon Musk To Honor His Tweet

July 17, 2018 08:11 AM Eastern Daylight Time

LAS VEGAS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Water Filtration Expert and Star of Animal Planet’s TANKED, Wayde King has pledged to install his superior filtration system in Flint, Michigan public schools while the current water issues are being addressed. King’s team has been working with the Mayor’s office in Flint to coordinate these efforts.

“This is a whole-house filtration system delivering purified water for drinking, cooking and bath/shower usage. It’s a real solution for the community, not just a band-aid.”

Tweet this

Since 2014, the residents of Flint have been plagued with contaminated water issues. The King Filtration System is an ideal solution for homes, businesses, schools and government buildings in Flint. The units are maintenance free, low-energy, self-purging pure alkaline spring water filtration systems, and warranted for 20 years. “This means, once the units are installed, homeowners and others with the units, will not incur any future expenses with additives such as salt bags or require any maintenance to clean or replace filters,” states King. “This is a whole-house filtration system delivering purified water for drinking, cooking and bath/shower usage. It’s a real solution for the community, not just a band-aid.”

King has over 30-years’ experience in developing and designing custom filtration systems. He understands the science and engineering to create efficient and effective filtration units that deliver superior water quality benefiting the public’s health and well-being.

King sees the biggest challenge to implementing a city-wide plan is the expense associated with the units and installation. Thus, when Elon Musk Tweeted on 1:52 PM – July 11, 2018 “Please consider this a commitment that I will fund fixing the water in any house in Flint that has water contamination above FDA levels. No kidding.”, King decided to call on Musk to honor his tweet and join his efforts. Musk has the financial means, we have the “fix”, a long-term “fix”.

“We have the capacity to begin installations immediately,” notes King. He is also reaching out to his fans and celebrity associates to assist with the cause and increase awareness of this dire situation.

As for the educational institutions, initially King will provide and install a custom system in a Flint public school at no-charge to the city with the hopes of creating an “adopt-a-school” fund for the remaining institutions.

"I would like to thank our friends at Tanked and Kings Filtration System for all of the work that they are doing on behalf of the Flint residents. We are working together to solve the water issue at the schools and hoping to go beyond that and into the community. With their help, as well as anyone else who steps in and steps up, we will move our residents from crisis to recovery," states Mayor Weaver.

$5-25 Million Historical Restoration/Preservation Category

The city of Las Vegas Historic Westside School has been selected as one of the American Public Works Association’s Public Works Projects of the Year for 2018 in the category of Historical Restoration/Preservation, $5 million but less than $25 million. Plaques recognizing the honor will be presented to the city of Las Vegas Public Works team that managed the project, the project general contractor Whiting-Turner, and the project architect, KME Architects, at the APWA annual Public Works Expo in Kansas City, Missouri, Aug. 27.

“As the first elementary school in West Las Vegas, the Historic Westside School holds many memories for longtime residents,” said Ward 5 Councilman Cedric Crear. “It is wonderful to have the school restored for the community to use and to see it’s restoration nationally recognized.”

The Historic Westside School was built as the Las Vegas Grammar School Branch No. 1 in 1923 and expanded in 1948, and both buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was the only grammar school on the west side of the railroad tracks until 1945 and the first public school attended by Native American students from the neighboring Paiute Indian colony. During the 1920s, Las Vegas was a racially diverse settlement and public education was integrated. It is the oldest remaining schoolhouse in Las Vegas.

The school’s two buildings are located on a 2.84-acre campus at 330 and 350 W. Washington Ave. Work began in January 2015 to return the original four-classroom building to its 1923 appearance inside and out. The 1948 annex building now looks much as it did when it was built. But modern improvements, such as natural gas-powered air conditioning, up-to-date electrical wiring, insulated windows, a secured and repaved parking lot with 16 covered parking spaces, three electric car charging stations and three bike racks, have replaced the chalkboards and desks. Both buildings have been repurposed as potential meeting rooms, offices, shops and exhibit space.

More than 160 construction workers labored for 18 months on improvements. Plans for restoring the historic school began as early as 2005, but were hampered by a lack of funds. Rehabilitating the school involved painstaking historical research, allowing contractors to restore floors, windows and walls to their early appearance. Lighting fixtures no longer available had to be replicated from photographs and approved by historic preservation experts from the Las Vegas Historic Preservation Commission, the State Historical Preservation Office and the National Parks Service, since the school is included on the city of Las Vegas Historic Property Register and the state and National Register of Historic Places. The same was true for the school’s entrance doors and built-in cabinets. Old carpet, padding and tiles were removed to reveal the school’s original Douglas fir wooden flooring, and the complex’s exteriors were returned to their original mint green.

The structures closed as a school in 1966, although the buildings have been used for other purposes since. Today KCEP Power 88 radio station, the Nevada Preservation Foundation, Las Vegas School Uniforms and Tech Impact, a nonprofit corporation that provides information technology job training for urban young adults, have leased space in the school. However, there is still space available to lease in both buildings.

The entire school complex was renovated, including the 5,333-square-foot, Mission Revival-style 1923 building; the 11,600-square-foot, Ranch-style annex building and courtyard; parking lot and grounds. The city currently is seeking Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver certification for the buildings, as well as seeking new tenants for the available spaces. Call 702-229-6551 or email jquisenberry for more information on what is available to lease.

The $12.5 million cost for rehabilitating the historic property was funded by the Commission for the Las Vegas Centennial, the city of Las Vegas Redevelopment Agency and the city of Las Vegas, which also made use of $4 million in gap financing supplied via the federal New Markets Tax Credits program. See more about this historic rehabilitation by viewing a brief video at https://youtu.be/X08st3zGHYk.

The City Will Participate In A Competition This June

For the second time in the past three years, the city of Las Vegas was named one of 20 finalists for the 2018 All-America City Award (AAC) by the National Civic League. City representatives and community partners will participate in the All-America City Awards Competition and Event in Denver June 22-24.

The award, which will be given to 10 cities, celebrates and recognizes neighborhoods, villages, town, cities, counties, tribes and regions that engage residents in innovative, inclusive and effective efforts to tackle critical challenges. The 2018 awards focus on inclusive engagement practices that promote equity.

The application concentrated on its commitment to incorporating social equity into its sustainability and livability principles and strategies through its partnerships and programs. It also featured three community-driven projects:

– The Harbor, a juvenile assessment center with a mission to provide a safe place for guidance as well as to be responsive to the well-being of youth, families, victims and the Clark County community by providing meaningful services to youth and their families.

– “Our Stories,” a book by the Westside School Alumni Foundation documenting Las Vegas experiences from a variety of people. This has helped to pave the road for a collaboration working toward significant infrastructure improvements and innovative collective progress for the historic Westside.

– ReInvent Schools Las Vegas, a school district pilot program that partners public and private organizations with individual campuses to offer students more support both within and outside the classroom. The schools address educational equity across the school district and focus on aligning academic achievement, expanded learning, integrated student support and family and community engagement.

The team of Las Vegas representatives will make a 10-minute presentation to a jury of national civic experts in Denver this June; the top 10 cities will receive a 2018 AAC award.

If selected as a winner, which no community in Nevada has achieved yet, the Las Vegas community could benefit in a variety of ways. Previous winners have attracted and retained businesses and residents; seen an increase in tourists and grants; fostered new partnerships within their community; received more national recognition; and, created a new sense of pride, accomplishment and teamwork within their community.

Between now and then, the city will launch a campaign to promote its status as a finalist which will include participation in community events, providing business and organizations with a social media tool kit and more.

The city of Las Vegas has been selected as a finalist for a Government Social Media Golden Post Award in the category of “Social Media Crisis Communications” for how it shared accurate and timely information with the public during the Oct. 1, 2017 tragedy. The fourth annual Golden Post Awards is exclusively designed to honor outstanding use of social media by local and state government agencies in the United States. Winners are revealed during the Government Social Media Conference awards ceremony on Wednesday, April 25, Denver, Colorado.

According to Scott Adams Las Vegas City Manager, it’s an honor to be nominated for this award. “Our social media presence is a strong force for information in this community. We use it primarily to respond to the concerns and inquiries of our citizens and to deliver pertinent information to them,” said Adams. “In the case of an emergency, cultivating this virtual community becomes even more important as it is a built in mechanism for important public safety information. I am proud of our team and the work they have done to build and support this network.”

During the Oct. 1, 2017 tragedy on the Strip, the city of Las Vegas’ social media accounts were one of the primary places people visited for information about the incident. The city of Las Vegas saw an unprecedented level of messages and comments to its social network during the first two weeks in October. During a time where misinformation was everywhere, the city of Las Vegas social network became one of the verified places where people could turn for accurate and timely information. In fact, an image about how to help and find loved ones was shared 36,000 times on Twitter and 32,000 times on Facebook.

The city’s Twitter profile received 527,000 visits in the few days following the shooting, 13,000 Facebook messages and 12,000 direct messages on Twitter.

News conferences held by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and including Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman and members of the City Council were streamed live on the city’s social media pages resulting in hundreds of thousands of views.

Amid the devastation, city leaders came together to build a community healing garden. The garden was built in just four days. A video created by KCLV Channel 2, the city’s TV station was viewed 1.4 million times on Facebook and was shared 37,000 times with 1,200 comments.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. April 02, 2018 – It’s no April Fool’s joke. On Monday, Nevada’s average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline touched $3 for the first time since September 2015. Both Washoe County and Clark County were paying more than $3 after the weekend’s price increase.

With summer travel season almost here, AAA believes prices will continue to rise as we approach Memorial Day on May 28. Peak prices will likely be between Memorial Day and Labor Day, the final holiday weekend of summer, according to AAA.

"It’s likely that Nevadans could be paying more than $3 at the pump for much of summer," said Michael Blasky, spokesman for AAA Nevada. "More people are driving for work, taking vacations and spending money on travel. That’s a good sign for the economy, but strong demand will drive up gasoline prices."

Nevada prices jumped 8 cents in just a week as U.S. refineries continue to undergo routine spring maintenance. This is the season when refineries switch from producing their winter blend of gasoline and begin selling the summer blend, which is more refined and better for the environment, but also more expensive.

Gasoline prices are also being driven by higher oil prices. Crude oil was selling for about $65 a barrel on Monday. Oil prices have been steadily rising since last summer, when oil was trading for about $40 a barrel. As oil prices rise, gasoline prices typically rise as well.

Nevada’s prices are also being driven by heavy travel demand and a stronger economy bringing more people to Southern Nevada. Clark County added more than 47,000 residents in 2017, with only Maricopa County in Arizona adding more people.

In 2015, the price spike above $3 in Nevada was largely due to an explosion at Exxon Mobil’s refinery in Los Angeles, which drove prices in Las Vegas from $2.20 in February to more than $3.20 by May 2015.

"Nevada has almost zero oil refineries, sourcing most of its gasoline from California refineries," said Blasky. "Because of that, Nevada is very dependent on the performance of those refineries in California. Any major unexpected shutdown will likely cause prices to spike even further."

AmeriCorps Members To Be Recognized During Red Rock Elementary School Service Project

On National Service Recognition Day Tuesday, April 3, the AmeriCorps members serving in Las Vegas will be honored and recognized for their service. This sixth annual National Service Recognition Day event will be held at Red Rock Elementary School, 408 Upland Blvd.

From 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the ReInvent Schools Las Vegas (RSLV) AmeriCorps team, along with the Nevada Statewide Coalition Partnership AmeriCorpsmembers, will continue their ongoing beautification efforts at the school by painting a large map of the United States as a learning tool for the students. Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman will speak to the group at 1 p.m. and conclude the project by adding a star for Las Vegas to the map.

City of Las Vegas AmeriCorps members serve more than 575 students at nine RSLV schools. RSLV is a partnership between the Clark County School District and the city of Las Vegas, in collaboration with local businesses and nonprofit organizations. These community schools are hubs where students and their families are assisted. RSLV focuses on aligning academic achievement, expanded learning, integrated student supports, and family and community engagement.

In Nevada this year, 327 AmeriCorps state members are helping to meet local needs throughout the state at 78 host sites in 11 Nevada counties. AmeriCorps members serve by mentoring 640 children and youth, assisting 880 people in rural communities to access healthcare options to help fight opioid and prescription drug abuse, and restore 2,700 acres by removing fire fuel hazards and invasive species. National Service Recognition Day is an opportunity to recognize the dedication and commitment of more than one million Americans who have chosen to serve their country through AmeriCorps, and to encourage more Americans to follow in their footsteps in service in the State of Nevada and across the nation.

Las Vegas, March 21, 2018 – Today, US Ignite Inc., a nonprofit organization helping to accelerate advanced networking technologies, and Cox Communications announced the designation of the city of Las Vegas as the newest member of the Smart Gigabit Communities (SGC) program. Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) in 2015, US Ignite’s SGC program is creating “living lab” environments for the next generation of gigabit applications. Las Vegas, the 25th community designated as a SGC, joins 24 other national and international communities participating in the SGC program. This announcement will be made during the 2018 US Ignite Application Summit held in Kansas City and co-located with the Smart Cities Connect Conference & Expo.

The SGC program facilitates collaboration among US Ignite, universities, municipalities, community anchor institutions like hospitals and schools, nonprofits, network carriers and ISPs. Together, these organizations are focused on developing smart gigabit applications that can address local community needs, such as education, workforce development, public safety and community health. Each community joining the network has made a significant commitment toward embracing next-generation smart city and Internet technologies to keep pace with the world’s rapidly changing technology and economy. Additionally, each member of the program has committed to develop two gigabit applications or gigabit services per year that provide advanced technology solutions to issues faced by that community. They also agree to share those applications with the others in the Smart Gigabit Communities program.

“We are phenomenally excited and honored to be one of the 25 cities chosen to participate in the US Ignite Smart Gigabit Communities program,” Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman said. “Las Vegas has become known as a city of innovation, and I know this partnership with Cox Communications will continue to move us toward becoming a world-class city.”

While many communities in the SGC program are funded by grants from the NSF, Cox Communications has been the only private business to sponsor multiple communities to participate in the program. Las Vegas is the third Smart Gigabit Community funded by Cox Communications in the past two years. Phoenix was named as a Smart Gigabit Community funded by Cox in 2016 and San Diego was named in 2017.

“Many communities are in search of ways to position themselves as technology drivers and innovation leaders in economic development and quality of life for their residents,” said Michael F. Bolognini, vice president and market leader of Cox Communications in Las Vegas. “But being officially designated as a ‘Smart Gigabit Community’ and gaining entry into the cohort of national and international communities with shared access to new apps to improve local government services and quality of life for Las Vegas residents is a great testament to the spirit of innovation in our city. Cox has additionally positioned Las Vegas for success as a Smart Gigabit Community through its investments in its gigabit-enabled infrastructure throughout Las Vegas…a critical need for the Smart Cities of the future.”

Cox has been steadily building out its network infrastructure in Las Vegas since making its commitment to Southern Nevada nearly 20 years ago. The Company began offering multi-gig speeds to commercial customers more than a decade ago and is set to complete network enhancements this year that will provide gigabit internet throughout its entire footprint in the Las Vegas area, by the end of 2019.

“The city of Las Vegas represents an invaluable expansion to our network of Smart Gigabit Communities program,” said US Ignite Executive Director William Wallace. “We anticipate that the addition of the city of Las Vegas into our ecosystem of Smart Gigabit Communities will yield many benefits not just for the city of Las Vegas, but also for people throughout the country. We appreciate Cox Communications commitment to the program overall and for making the city of Las Vegas’s participation a reality.”

US Ignite has organized local communities and assisted in building over 100 next-generation advanced networking applications since its inception. Each participating community receives access to a low-latency and ultra-fast network with local cloud computing and storage capabilities that will support highly interactive and visually immersive experiences not possible on today’s commercial Internet.

About Cox Communications

Cox Communications is a broadband communications and entertainment company, providing advanced digital video, Internet, telephone and home security and automation services over its own nationwide IP network. The third-largest U.S. cable company, Cox serves approximately 6 million residences and businesses. Cox is known for its pioneering efforts in broadband, voice and commercial services, industry-leading customer care and its outstanding workplaces. For nine years, Cox has been recognized as the top operator for women by Women in Cable Telecommunications; Cox has ranked among DiversityInc’s Top 50 Companies for Diversity 12 times. More information about Cox Communications, a wholly owned subsidiary of Cox Enterprises, is available at www.cox.com and www.coxmedia.com.

About US Ignite, Inc.

US Ignite spurs the creation of next-generation applications and services that leverage advanced networking technologies to build the foundation for smart communities. The nonprofit organization helps to accelerate new wired and wireless networking advances from research to prototype to full-scale smart community and interconnected national deployments. US Ignite’s Smart Gigabit Communities program accelerates the adoption of ultra-fast, programmable fiber and wireless networks as the bedrock of smart communities by identifying new economic and social opportunities created by those networks. Additionally, US Ignite, together with Northeastern University, operates the National Science Foundation-funded Platforms for Advanced Wireless Research (PAWR) Project Office (PPO), coordinating a $100 million public-private partnership of federal agencies and over 25 leading companies and technology associations supporting the deployment of wireless research platforms in multiple communities across the United States. Together, these collaborative efforts among research universities, local communities, and industry will yield breakthroughs in new wired and wireless networking technology. The applications and services that result from this work will help enrich residents’ lives while generating improved and potentially transformative community services, investment in high-growth startups, and high-skilled jobs.
